  • José says:

You should change the water daily.

It’s not just the algae, it’s the other bacteria that is having a chance to grow, too. Still water is just full of bacteria/germs!

  • precious says:

Dogs water should be changed daily…..

  • Kate says:

yes it is probably algae or something that or the water is really dirty.

  • Aida says:

    Would you drink green water?

Of course it’s a health risk! Clean the bowl and change the water more often.

  • snarrrg. says:

we’ll i change my dogs water up for four times a day so that its fresh,
prahaps you should look at doing the same if its going green.

  • J'adore says:

I don’t think it will turn green after a couple of days, but I would change it daily to make sure there is no bacterial growth in it.

  • rcpaden says:

It won’t hurth them but, all creatures should have fresh water replaced daily. They can get all sorts of parasites in the water…

  • simqeen says:

    D:

I change my dog’s water at least every 12 hours.

How could you let it turn GREEN? :O

  • beechnut45 says:

Yes! Change the dogs water every day. (lazy)

  • Taylor G. says:

well would you like to drink water filled with alge? i dont know………………… any idiot would know thta’s a health risk.

  • sas1184 says:

Yes there are several things that grow in stagnant water that cause illness. Some algae is toxic as well as larvae. Water needs to be changed regularly or use a pet flow watering system.

  • Your dog should get fresh water every day. It could probably make them sick, especially if it’s been sitting there for several days.

  • Mike says:

Try and keep the dish out of the sun aswell as in a cool area and this should allow the water to stay fresh for the day. make sure to change it daily though.

  • laneybug_lbp says:

I wouldn’t let my dog drink it. I think that’s kind of gross. I can’t really control what animals drink/eat outside the home, unless I’m right there with them, but inside the home an animal should always have fresh water. Would you want to drink green water? If not, why give it to an animal you love?

  • Ghost Mutt says:

Its probably because you change their water but dont clean their bowl properly. if your dogs drink it then it probably wont do too much harm but it is still pretty irresponcible to not change it more often

  • I dont think it is to good for the water to turn green and then the dog drinking it but try this…..try cleaning the dish every night or morning and see what happens if not try getting a new bowl!

  • Red Ace says:

DON”T LET THEM DRINK GREEN WATER! from what i know about wroking on lakes is that green water (or any color change in anything) means that there is a chemical change, water usually turns green from algea or bacteria. alway change dogs water daily, especially dog water

  • Kit_kat says:

the water is suppose to be given fresh EVERYDAY
and the bowl should be at least rinsed and wiped out before the fresh water is given so the water won’t turn green

  • Jennifer T says:

Drink it yourself. If you don’t puke or drop dead, it’s fine.

  • Jessica U says:

Dogs usually get dirt in their water when they drink. I would change it at least 1 time a day if not more.

  • bobhikes says:

You should be changing the water everyday. Stagnate water at room temperature or warmer gets bacteria which can also cause you problems.

  • natc says:

EEEWWWWWW, WASH THE GOD DAMN BOWL EVERYDAY. STAGNENT WATER CAN CAUSE UPSET TUMMY AND BOWEL PROBS.

    VET NURSE

  • if were a dog with a human’s brain and i wasn’t colorblind i wouldn’t drink green water for a rat’s crap.

  • susan says:

Clean the bowl with chlorine bleach to kill the algae and then change the water daily.

  • Amberlee says:

Yes, It gives your dog a stomach ache. I advise you wash and rewater the bowl every day.

  • You should be giving your dog or dogs fresh water every day. YES, it’s a health risk! If it’s growing algae that means it’s stagnant and can be hosting other things like parasite larvae. The dog(s) should have clean water out of the tap, just like you.

  • I would change her watter daily.Algae won’t hurt her though but I wouldn’t want to drink it.

  • chloe shelle says:

yes it is danerous because its not just algae its bacteria

you need to change the water daily!!!!!!!

  • Julianne B says:

I dont think so but I would change the water every day.

  • kk says:

i think so i mean what do you think would happen to you if u drank green water

  • j dizzle says:

would you drink it? if not, then dont let your dog. change water daily, stagnent water can kill animals. have a nice day.and go the bulldogs.

  • It is because you have the drinking water in the shade. I know it is hot and they need nice cool water. What I do is fill up empty plastic bottled water bottles and freeze them and put them in there bowl. Clean with a brush and add a little bleach should take care of the green yuk stuff. But as everyone else. Change water each day.

  • If your dogs water is “green” that means it is full of algae and toxins, not very health period.
Your dogs water should be changed daily sometimes twice a day depending the the temperature of the area you live ~ the hotter the climate, the faster algae will grow.

  • belladonna25 says:

You should provide clean drinking water to a dog daily that’s what a responsible pet owner does.

  • Comando says:

Yes it is a saftey hazard, if ur dog drinks it, take it to the vet right away

you know what, no offense, but your lucky i dont have the will to report you to animal control because that is really not a good enviroment for a dog,

my advise clean the bowl every day with hot water and soap
then put it in a cool shady area

change the water twice a day

  • Elaine M says:

Algae can hold bacteria which would be where any problem comes in.

Best to wash the dish out every day or every other day. We keep two dishes and I just trade out the new/fresh one when I fill for them.

  • Green is not a good sign. You need to clean the water bowl daily. It does pose a health risk. Would you want to drink green water? If not, don’t make your dogs.

  • EasyVee says:

Change the water and clean the bowl daily. Would you drink day old water from a dirty container?

  • Water for your dog shouldn’t ever turn green. Algae is a living organism. I don’t know if seaweeds are unhealthy for your dog, but you should probably take your doggy dishes out of direct sunlight. It may prevent it from growing. Maybe try sterilizing the dish before rewatering.

  • daahambone says:

Algae scum on top of standing water can definitely be toxic to dogs, so I wouldn’t take the risk with tainted water. Think of it this way: If you won’t drink the water, then neither should your dog.

  • jean b says:

, Dogs water should be changed everyday!! yes it could be a health risk the water is stagnant so contains lots of germs also a dog needs cool water

  • Julia says:

I soooooo love it when negligent pet owners post questions like this, which basically amount to, “Is it OK for me to not take good care of my dog?” Usually they are angry later and say that people were rude or judgmental in their answers. People have been rude to you, and some have been a little judgmental, too. Guess what. You deserve it. It is negligent, lazy and careless not to change the dog’s water every day. Not mention dangerous and unhealthy for the dog. If you can’t spend a few seconds doing this simple thing for your pet, then pack him up and give him to someone who will take proper care of him.

  • WASH THE BOWL EVERY DAY!

  • donna k says:

Anyone that cares for their animal would change the water daily.
How much effort does that take, and what does it cost? I’m sorry, but if you have to ask this question, you shouldn’t have an animal

  • Squirt says:

I just want to say it is a health risk , I wouldn’t drink it so why would your dog. The water should be changed daily and the bowl cleaned out every three four days. Algae is not the only thing in there there are plenty of germs and bacteria that that can be harmful to your dog.

  • biggymybully says:

Why would you let him drink green water? better yet why do you even let it turn green? I have to say I think your being a little lazy.I change my puppy’s water all the time not just to keep it clean but the water warms down after a while they need fresh clean water, I even carry a cold bottle of water with me when we go out.

  • Liz says:

it’s recommended you give your dogs fresh water daily. Any water that sits longer and grows algae grows bacteria as well. Always change your dogs water daily!!

  • DP says:

Are you serious?? In their water dish?? I wash our water dishes at least 2 times a day.. Rinse them thoroughly each time I put down fresh clean water.. Which is probably 6 ot 7 times a day. I have never had water turn green.. You are not putting down fresh water often enough.. Especially in this hot weather.. How lazy can someone be????

  • luvadoodle89 says:

I have the perfect solution for your problem!….I live in the south and even though I change my dog’s water daily algae begins to grow in a matter of hours due to the high humidity. To keep the algae from growing just place a stalk of fresh mint with approx. 4-5 leaves in the fresh water. Crush it in your hand first to release the natural oils from the leaves.

Fresh mint will keep algae from growing and misquitos also hate mint plus your dog will have nice fresh breath!

  • Debbie Y says:

Answer this question – Would you drink green water? If the answer is no, as it should be, why would you think your dog should drink it?
